Immersive Engineering Power Generation, Storage, and Distribution

This guide explains how to generate, store, and distribute power using wires, transformers, and generators in Immersive Engineering. Power transfer in this mod uses cables stretched between connectors, rather than block-based power lanes.

Basic Wiring

An electrical grid relies on three key components: Connectors, Relays, and Transformers. Connectors act as input and output points for the grid, allowing powered devices to transfer energy. Relays link multiple wires together, forming hubs for the electrical grid without directly inputting or outputting power. Transformers convert power between different wire voltages.

To connect two devices, use a wire coil on the first device, then use the same coil on the second. Wires will break if a block obstructs their path. The power transfer rate between two points is limited by the lowest tier of wire used in the connection. Connectors and Relays are designed for specific wire voltages, meaning they can only accept wires of that voltage. Transformers require two wires of different voltages. Wires of low and medium voltage can be insulated to protect nearby creatures from damage.

Multiple Connectors can be unified onto a single wire using Relays, centralizing long-range power transfer. If the combined maximum transfer rate from these Connectors exceeds the wire's capacity, the wire will burn up. Only the input and output points of a wire need to be active for power to transfer, allowing high-voltage wires to bridge large distances for energy delivery to distant locations. When using the "Pick Block" function on a Connector while sneaking, the connected wire will be retrieved from your inventory.

Kinetic Generators

The simplest method of power generation involves harnessing natural forces. The Kinetic Dynamo connects to devices that produce shaft power and generates electricity based on their rotation speed. Windmills and Waterwheels are the only sources of shaft power the Kinetic Dynamo accepts and must be assembled after the dynamo to connect.

Windmills offer a basic but slow method of power generation. Their speed depends on the open space in front of them; obstructions significantly reduce output. Stronger winds from rain or storms increase speed. Wind power can be improved by covering the blades with cloth, which increases surface area, rotation speed, and energy output. Windmill sails are crafted from tough fabric and applied to the Windmill by right-clicking.

Waterwheels provide a consistent source of shaft power, requiring steel for their construction due to higher stresses. Rotational speed is determined by the amount of water flowing around the wheel, with more water yielding greater speed. Up to three Waterwheels can be placed adjacently to share shaft power from a single shaft.

Diesel Generator

The Diesel Generator is the primary method for generating High-Voltage (HV) power. It operates on Biodiesel or other heavy fuels, consuming fuel rapidly due to its high output, necessitating sufficient fuel production. The generator is assembled from radiators, pipes, engineering blocks, and scaffolding, and activated by using an Engineer's Hammer on its central generator block. Fuel is input at the bottom corners, and energy outputs to up to three plugs on the bar above the generator. The output power is split among all connected plugs. The generator only runs if at least one output can accept energy. A redstone signal to the small terminal on the side will turn off the generator; this behavior can be inverted with an Engineer's Screwdriver.

Accumulators

Accumulators serve as energy storage units. Power input and output are limited to one connector per side, matching the accumulator's voltage. Side configurations can be adjusted with an Engineer's Hammer: blue indicates input, orange indicates output, and no color prevents any connection. Sneaking while configuring a side will adjust the opposite side.

Transformers

Transformers are devices that convert between different wire voltages. Standard Transformers can convert freely between Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV). High Voltage (HV) conversion requires specialized circuits found in the HV Transformer. Standard Transformers can be placed on Posts due to their compact design, but HV Transformers cannot. The HV Transformer can directly step between LV and HV, reducing the number of Transformers needed in a setup.

Tesla Coil

The Tesla Coil was originally conceived for wireless energy transfer but was repurposed for defense due to high power loss and its property of harming living beings within a 6-meter radius. The Tesla Coil has a high upkeep cost, consuming 256 Flux passively and an additional 512 Flux each time it deals damage. It is disabled unless supplied with a redstone signal; this behavior can be inverted with an Engineer's Screwdriver. Shocks from the coil also apply a "Stunned" debuff, preventing creatures from teleporting.

While sneaking, right-clicking the coil with an Engineer's Screwdriver (when the coil is off) toggles between high- and low-power modes. High-power mode is the default. In low-power mode, the coil uses half the energy and has half the range. A coil in low-power mode will not shock creatures wearing a full Faraday suit, though it will still emit lightning. High-power coils use special techniques to make discharges more lethal, causing Faraday suits to melt, increasing damage to wearers and damaging the suit itself. The Faraday suit also protects against uninsulated wiring.

Fluorescent tubes glow when placed within a strong high-frequency electric field, such as one generated by an active Tesla Coil. The glow range is about 1.5 times the lightning strike range. Fluorescent tubes can be colored in an engineer's workbench and rotated by sneak-right-clicking with an Engineer's Hammer. To pick up a tube, sneak-right-click it with an empty hand.
